The second of our three part Wy’East Ski Mountaineering Series is hosted by Timberline Lodge on April 1st. Come join the fun and test your skills. The series is designed to provide an introduction into the world of Ski Mountaineering (ski-mo) racing.
Pre-registration cost is $35 (per race) and ends March 30th for the second race

The Timberline race will be fundraising money for the Children’s Cancer Association.
Not planning to race? There is still plenty of fun to be had! Come check out the Demo Tent where you can try out select Mountain Shop skis and gear. Plus, Mountain Shop has partnered with Timberline Ski Patrol, Timberline Mountain Guides, Portland Mountain Rescue and NWAC to offer an Introduction to Alpine Touring Clinic. Cost is $10 with all proceeds benefiting the NWAC. Pre-Registration for the clinic is required.

The course as proposed will start promptly at 1:00 p.m., April Fool’s day, just on the East of Timberline Lodge The starting line is where the groomed snow shoe trails begin. Skiers will start off following the groomed trail as the field separates out into their ability and rate of travel groupings. After this starting traverse and short climb we will descend into the climbers gully and ascend approximately .25 of a mile to a short boot pack segment out of the gully. This ascent will be a safe distance down the gully from the major cornice as determined by NWAC and Brett. We will ascend towards the Silcox hut. All skiers will need to reach the Silcox hut by the 2:00 cut off time or they will be directed West on a relatively on-contour traverse to the area boundary. There skiers will descend Coffel’s Run to the top of Stormin Normin Lift and follow Lodge Getback run to the finish line directly in front of the Timberline Lodge parking lot where the registration, demo and Mountain Shop van is set up. All competitors making the cut off time will ascend to the right of the Palmer snow field near the climbers route. Once at the top Skiers follow a on-contour traverse to the top of the Palmer Lift. Depending upon snow conditions (and potential grooming) skiers descend Willis Run, then traverse West toward area boundary above the Magic Mile lift to avoid normal skiers coming off the lift. Skiers continue the descent to skiers right of Coffel’s run to the top of Stormin Norman where skiers ride Lodge Getback all the way to the finish in front of the Timberline Lodge Parking lot.
The only other possible variation for the route I can figure out is to have all skiers traverse above Silcox hut toward the Western boundary and have the cut off time set at the crossing just above the base of the Palmer lift and the lead skiers continuing to climb on the wild snow west of the Palmer lift and descend the route described above. Those that don’t make the cut off time continue to the West Boundary and descend the route described above. This variation would give all skiers a break from the continuous ascent of the Eastern route. I am presently working on a map of the route and meeting again with Brett on Thursday to access snow conditions, marking the route, weather and refinements to the race routes.
