Mountain Shop is looking to hire an individual to work full time year-round to manage and maintain the tune shop as a Shop Tech Lead; working on both customer and rental equipment.

The Shop Technician is a pivotal part of the team here at Mountain Shop where we strive to foster community connection to the outdoors by offering curated gear and knowledgeable staff to help beginners and experts alike with their equipment needs. As Portland’s oldest specialized outdoor retailer, established in 1937, Mountain Shop has solidified itself as a major PNW outdoor community partner by providing the best equipment, services, and knowledge. We pride ourselves in having a diverse staff that spends most of their free time outdoors refining their skills and knowledge to pass on to our customers. Shop Technicians are responsible for maintaining our connection to the community through the setup, repair, and maintenance of customer equipment. As a Shop Technician Lead, you will spend the majority of your time working on customer equipment, repairing rental equipment, and maintaining tuning machines. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented individual who is mechanically inclined with strong problem solving skills. This individual will excel in a fast paced environment working with machines and hand tools in a variety of applications to produce a high quality finished product.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain equipment and ensure a clean, secure and safe work environment
  • Perform daily maintenance and cleaning duties
  • Assess ski and snowboard damage and provide recommendations to repair
  • Perform high quality tunes on customer equipment
  • Meet repair work deadlines
  • Properly mount and test customer bindings
  • Diagnose and repair broken bindings
  • Maintain tuning machines and equipment
  • Communicate with customers regarding repairs, services, etc.
  • Develop an effective approach to suggesting appropriate tune services and rental items
  • Gain required product knowledge to answer shop and/or equipment related questions
  • Ensure shop remains stocked with essential supplies
  • Maintain rental equipment throughout the season
  • Sharpen ice tools and crampons
  • Manage shop service appointments
  • Assist rental department when necessary
  • Assist retail floor when necessary
  • Knowledge and competency using our POS software, EasyRent


Requirements:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous outdoor retail experience
  • Previous ski and snowboard tuning experience
  • Experience operating machinery preferred
  • Ski and/or snowboard experience
  • Working knowledge of skis, bindings, and snowboards
  • Reliable
  • Ability to lift up to 40lbs periodically
  • A strong passion for the outdoors (skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, climbing, etc.)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Provide outstanding customer service

Other Details:

  • Pay Type: Hourly
  • $16.00-19.00/hr depending on experience
